Occupying a six-storey late-Victorian townhouse in Mayfair, 5 Carlos Place was conceived as the physical expression of MATCHESFASHION’s world – a space that reimagines contemporary retail through the lens of domestic life. P. Joseph led the architecture, interior design and creative direction, transforming the building into a richly atmospheric residence for an imagined, well-travelled couple whose presence is felt throughout.
The project plays to the strengths of the townhouse’s original architecture, balancing the restoration of historic elements with the careful reconfiguration of spaces to suit a modern, flexible programme. Each floor unfolds as if within a private home, layered with texture, colour and detail. Furniture, lighting and art appear collected over a lifetime, creating a sense of discovery – as though visitors have been invited to explore while the owners are away.
Designed to accommodate an evolving range of activities – from personal shopping and talks to installations and intimate gatherings – the house provides a fluid framework for MATCHESFASHION’s ever-changing calendar. At its top, the Attic functions as a broadcasting space, sharing the life of the house with the wider world, while a planted terrace by Urquhart & Hunt extends the domestic atmosphere outdoors, offering a secluded oasis in the heart of Mayfair.
Attention to craft and materiality runs throughout: bespoke terracotta details by Darwen Terracotta echo the building’s Victorian heritage, while artist Nick Hornby’s sculptural works animate the stairwell. Every element was designed to feel permanent and personal, ensuring that the experience of visiting 5 Carlos Place is more than commercial – it is immersive, transporting, and deeply human.
